Alnwick is a traditional medieval market town which boasts a number of fantastic tourist attractions. Its close proximity to the stunning Northumberland coast and the rolling Cheviot hills makes it a perfect location for exploring.
Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland and the film location for the likes of Harry Potter, Transformers, Dungeons and Dragons and Downton Abbey is packed with history, heritage and live entertainment. Its world-class gardens which include Europe's largest treehouse and the world's largest outdoor play structure, Lillidorei is a must-visit.
Barter Books, Europe's largest second-hand book store is a short walk from Thornbrae and is perfect for breakfast or a lunch buffet. The town has a number of fine bars and restaurants, the Oaks is just a 2-minute walk from our accommodation.
For the history lover there are signs of Northumberland’s often turbulent past on our very doorstep.
The magnificent cliff-top ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle are a scenic walk from the village of Craster, with other castles at Bamburgh, Lindisfarne and Warkworth all within a short car journey away. Other historic sights of interest are the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall which is around an hour’s drive to the south and the mysterious Neolithic art-works known as Cup & Ring marks which are found preserved in many spots in the a=county such as Lordenshaws near Rothbury and Old Bewick near Alnwick.
Heading east from Thornbrae brings you to the spectacular Northumberland coast.
Quaint seaside villages such as Alnmouth, Craster & Bamburgh to the bustling ports of Amble and Seahouses provide the ideal day out and shopping trip. The coastline is both beautiful and varied with rugged cliff-top walks and golden sandy beaches to stroll and enjoy.
There is the opportunity to explore the wild cheviot hills or Kielder Forest areas.
Home to some of the country’s rarest animals such as Osprey, Red Squirrel and Otters. For the keen walker or cyclist, this is about as near to heaven as you will find!
